Abbotsbury 20/12/14

I Fished a very windy day from late morning until dark, Baits were dungy blacks ,squid and cuttle fish. Despite the wind it was very fishable .I used dropper wishbone rigs to keep the bait on the bottom and a pully pennel for a while and all the fish come on the dropper rigs I  believe I probably would of blanked if i only used pulleys on the two rods .As for the fish i managed a few whiting a very big pout ,poor cod ,loads of dogfish and two codling which were in close and around 3lbs in weight . Not sure how i managed the bigger codling as the rig some how detached from one rod and was joined to the rig on the other rod but I wont complain .Looking at the weather that might well be the last trip this year

Abbotsbury 12/12/2014

Headed down to Abbotsbury for the calm after the storm with the hope of some bigger cod about so I decided  to make the 45mins walk to deeper water past the Dragons Teeth 'which are tank traps from the world war 2 but look like Dragons Teeth from a distance '. I was using fresh dungy and yellow tails for bait and stuck to pulley pennel rigs . Bites were plentiful from the off with a nice codling on my first cast which looked like a good sign . For the next 3 hours over high water the rods were going just about every 5 minutes but this was mainly whiting snatching the bait but thankfully I wasn't catching to many of them probably because of the large hooks I was using 6/0 Aberdeens .At one stag both rods pulled right over at the same time so I went for my new rod first and I could feel a good fish knocking on the end but lost it on the way in so quickly went to the other rod and thankfully the fish was well hooked in the front lip and a nice bass was landed . This was

West bexington 22nd November

Image
I had a short session at west bexington this weekend , My target was bass as I had some good sized bass at the west end of the beach towards the end of last year 'mainly at Cogdon' but didn't find the walk down the hill too apealing this weekend so parked up at west bexington and walked towards Cogdon.I started with ragworm on a loop rig but couldn't find a bite until bang om that magical time on chesil when the tide turns and I had my first bass in a long while and probably the smallest I have ever had !! I wish I could say the fishing really took off after this but it didn't in fact as the sun was going down my bait was being robbed by dogfish and whiting within seconds .So for once I gave up early and will be trying the portland end next weekend in the hope to avoid the bait robbers

Dragons Teeth 17th November

Another day off work for fishing so I decided to make the long walk past the teeth which is about a 40 minute walk from the car park .I arrived at low tide with a calm sea and there was plenty of fish for the first 3 hours but they were all whiting. Strangely the fishing completely died from a couple hours before high water and over it but I was thinking they would come on the feed when the tide turned at 3:15pm so I had two pulley pennels rigs  loaded up with lugworm ready for then but at 3:13pm I had a slack liner and lost it in the gutter. So quickly chucked out the pulley pennel rig and before I could sit down it had already been slack lined resulting in a 3lbs codling not massive but the biggest of the week I could not get through the whiting after this so I stuck to using simple rigs as the whiting were just going crazy but even the pulley pennel rigs didn't help as i was still getting two fish on each rig although most were of good size. I lost a big fish on a squid bai

16TH November Ferrybridge Brief report

Image
A pleasant days fishing at ferrybridge although it did rain most of the day and there was no big Cod at the end of the rainbow :( but plenty of codling about And I also had a nice pollack on a 10ft flowing  dvice rig which I was very happy with My mate also managed a nice smooth hound and 3star fish !!

Over The Fleet 14Th November and Wes Bexington 15Th November

Image
I had the day off work Friday so I went out fishing with a couple of mates from Three Counties saa .They wanted to go over the fleet in there boat so to make the most of it we left at 5am which meant getting up at 3:45 am !! .When we arrived the tide was running hard the wrong way and the wind and rain made it difficult to cross, we managed it in the end but I will not be taking that up as a hobby in the early hours ! Fishing Started well for me with a nice codling on my first cast but the joy didn't last long as my new rod broke leaving me with my older rods which cast much shorter distances and this is probably why I could connect with anymore cod  where as my mates were catching loads of them.I did manage a pollack close in and a dab We cut the trip short as the weather didn't look to good so we had to row across the fleet against the tide again which did not go well for some time ! After having so many codling of late me and Colin fancied a change so we thought we wo

Three counites saa match 8th Nov and chesil cod open 9th Nov

Three Counties sea Angling association held it's last match of the season on the 8th of November the venue was Abbotsbury and the weather on arrival was awful !! with a big sea and and a very strong southwesterly wind and rain postponing the start of the match for a few hours from 1:30 to a 3pm start .But thankfully the forecast was right for once with the wind and rain passing through by 3pm .All of the group fished just to the left of car park apart from me opting to walk to the teeth .The fishing was much easier going then we thought with the sea calming down very quickly as the wind dropped and there was plenty of fish to! I managed 6 codling all about 2lbs a dog fish and a couple whiting I believe everyone managed to land at least one codling with about 25 in total at the weigh in ,but still not much sign of the bigger ones showing . I finished a close 4th with the other members getting good hauls of dogfish!!! If anyone is looking for a club to join ...next month at

Ferrybridge And the Dragons Teeth 11th/12th oct

I fished are monthly match at ferrybridge on Saturday from 4pm-12pm .The wind was forecast to drop to about 10mph but it was closer to 20mph .So we were greeted with a choppy sea and rafts of weed which made fishing difficult to start with so I sat back and waited for it to ease off and it did just before dark however I stuck too one rod to keep it simple with others fishing very close. The fish were there from the off with codling ,jumbo pout ,Pollock and poor cod  to weigh in and I still come last but not to worry it's just a bit of fun  pffffffffffffff!. I still had all my bait left at the end of the match as someone gave me 1lb of rag half a lb of blow lug a bag a peelers and a bag of squid on arrival as they gave up fighting the weed. So to make the most of the weekend! I had a kip in the car then fished past the dragons to teeth .The conditions were now totally different with a very cold N/E -E wind and a flat sea with no weed in sight. And the fishing started great with 2 c

A Week Of Fishing ,Trip 4 Mission cod.....Part Two

Image
After getting back to the car we decided to head on to the next venue before getting some sleep ready for the next days fishing .I think we managed 4 hours sleep but we were awaken by heavey rain and strong winds so glad we didn't camp on the beach ! We stocked up on bait at Abbotsbury before setting up are home for the next 24 hours .As David had so much gear I drove down the road to drop it all of insted of walking all along the beach although I thought we would be less likely to find Davids cod in this spot.Fishing started well though with another codling and lovely Tub Gurnard for me So I was now hopeful . But we needed the wind to die down as it was getting rather cold! All of my fish were being caught at distance and this is probably why David couldn't connect with anything in daylight.I however now had a nice plaice all be it on a pulley pennel rig this does happens more often then you would think this time of year when people are fishing for cod I alway thought  S

A week of Fishing ,Trip 4 Mission Cod ! ...Part one

This Trip was all about getting my cousin David who I hadn't fished with for 12 years or so his first ever cod. He had come all the way down from kent for three days solid fishing so I was praying the weather wouldn't ruin things as the forecast for Saturday morning was for strong winds and rain .So from my previous few sessions I decided we would fish the Portland end first as it seemed to be fishing better .David had his heart set on camping on the beach but I had to get this idea out of his head as we were going to be walking 45minutes towards the bridging camp and with the possibility of thunderstorms from 4am I wasn't prepared to be out in the middle of nowhere with this and he also had enough fishing gear to sink a boat!! so we were not going to be doing the walk twice once is plenty! we finally made it to the mark around 5pm with a nice calm sea and sunny weather so I put my rods out before helping david to set up his shockline on his reels and the rigs I made him as

A week of fishing Trip 3 Abbotsbury and Portland

Image
Fished with club member Colin this weekend and we set up just before the teeth .I missed a few knocks early on where as Colin was reeling in gurnards, bream and his biggest plaice to date just under 2lbs ,the guy next to him was also catching plaice close in so there was a few about .So note to self don't target the cod when it was perfect for plaice ! When i did down size the hooks I did manage a few fish with this double shot of gurnard and bream coming right on low water I also had a nice big tub gurnard but put him straight back with out a picture. It went very quiet during darkness other then one dog fish and a big pull down of which i missed .Then the wind really got up about 11:00 pm and it started to rain but I wasn't really kitted out for this weather so having plenty of bait still I decided to get out of the rain and have few hours kip before fishing another venue That venue ended up being Ferrbridge at the Portland end of Chesil .The conditions were now fantastic

A Week Of Fishing, Trip 1 Abbotsbury teeth,Trip 2 Abbotsbury Cottages

Image
So this was my first trip of many this week and I decided to make the long walk to my plaice mark .Not the best of choices with the water a milky colour on arrival but was hoping that would soon clear as it happened it stayed milky up until the evening .So after 6 hours without a bite my rod I had out for cod went over only for me to miss it ! so re baited and put it in the same place and it was only a matter on minutes before it went over again and this time it was on and a lovely 5lb codling made up for a poor day Another codling was to follow on high tide and then the dog fish took over and the bait was getting snatched within minutes of every cast so gave up and went to sleep .As for Saturday very poor fishing again with only a red mullet to be seen so lets hope tomorrow is better !! Trip 2 The cottages Abbotsbury So I Thought I would fish the other end of Abbotsbury for a change opposite the cottages sadly I think I would of been better off towards the dragoons teeth

Abbotsbury plaice hunt September 20th/21st

Image
I had a really good session at my plaice mark this weekend but it wasn't only plaice I also had 12 bream and 3 red mullet . All fish were taken on  ragworm /Squid and were not interested in the frozen blacks so I must get fresh next time . As for the plaice, seeing as I was catching them in close range a couple of weeks ago I decided  to stick to that so I was casting no more then 60yards . I also left my worms out in the sun as the plaice seem to like them more when they go a bit manky and  I didn't have to wait long before one come along.  I was walking 30 yards down the beach for casting out and using a flat plain lead which would move around and hopefully find the fish and it seems to work well although the bream were finding the bait before the plaice most of the time but more were to follow And they say save the best till  last well that is what I did on this trip with a personal best plaice coming in at 3lbs 6oz resulting in a very happy angler

Abbotsbury 14th September

I had a spur-of -the -moment session sunday with good results.Although I was thinking of targeting plaice this was soon quashed on arrival when I was greeted with dirty water and a lot of undertow. So out with the cod rigs 'pulley pennels ' with fresh dungy as bait and straight in to the codling. All were around the 2lbs mark and I ended up catching eleven codling and one whiting so I am now looking forword to getting back down there !!!

Abbotsbury 6th/7th September Plaice Hunt

Well the wait for my prime plaice mark to open up for fishing has arrived and my first session there this year went well on the whole although it was hard work .I arrived on low water so had a brief go for codling while i waited for the sun to get up a bit higher .I didn't have high hopes of catching a cod what with the conditons/water colour and the trawler going round in circles in front of me So i wasn't  disappointed with a no show for them . Anyway 11am was soon appon me and  I was straight out with some dropper bling rigs and straight in to a nice paice target achieved on first cast resulting in a happy angler who could now chill for the rest of the day Bait was rag/lug Not long after another about the same size also took a liking to a Rag/lug cocktail About this time I was also catching some stunning little red mullet and a few Gurnard    There is not much to report from the night fishing other then a small smooth hound making an appearance So got some
